Biography

In Brief

Matt Hulse is an artist best known for his films although he has produced a diversity of works, some cross-disciplinary, including animation, audio art, installation, web projects, sound design, music, printed textiles & performance.

He is also active as a curator. In 2001 he was a recipient of a Creative Scotland Award.

Recent Activity

Matt’s debut feature film Follow The Master premiered at Edinburgh International Film Festival in June & was the second-fastest selling film of 2009. Here is information about upcoming screenings.

He has a film projection called Light Work (Many Hands) touring with the group show Follow a Thread (Six Contemporary Responses to the Art of Tapestry), made in collaboration with the weavers at Dovecot Studios, commissioned by IC: Innovative Craft.

A collaboration with artist Deirdre Nelson developed as part of the National Museum of Wales’ Artist Object Project was on show at the Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery. The piece, called Shift, explored sound as a means to animate ceramic shards and coal dust.

Matt continues work on his second feature Dummy Jim, based on the journal of profoundly deaf Scottish cyclist James Duthie who cycled solo to the Arctic Circle in 1951. The project has attracted support from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation & The National Deaf Children’s Society.

Financial backing for this project is being built with individual contributions from Kindly Folk.

Since 2005 Matt has collaborated with globally respected pianist & composer Max Richter, creating films for live performances of Richter’s work. Shows have included Territorias Festival (Seville), Wordless Music Season (New York City), Unsound Festival (Krakow) & Teatro Della Pergola (Florence).
