Lovely to hear from you. I was explaining all about the name ‘mole’ to Nick the other day – I don’t know if my explanation helped much.

Let me help in the demisting of the Grandpa’s. GP Eric is / was my dad’s dad. My grandpa on t’other side was John Jump, who edited, amongst other things, a really big book on Byron. I was named after Matthew Arnold, another focus of his academic attention – Mr Arnold is oft cited as one of the founders of modern literary criticism. Don’t you know. (No, neither did I). Is there a film in that, I hear you ask? Hmm.

Hope that helps? I seem to remember we spent many hilarious minutes on your Grandpa’s (Joe?) ‘shaking machine’ after snorting huge lines of menthol snuff through empty biro tubes.
